College Counseling

William Wright, College Counselor
Marissa Margosian, College Counselor

The immediate goal of the College Counseling Program is to help all Calverton students discover which kind of higher education will best fulfill their respective needs and aspirations, assist students as they identify and thoroughly research the specific institutions that will best provide for these, and help students gain admission to their school of choice. The ultimate goal is to ensure that all Calverton graduates attain an advanced education that will challenge, prepare, and enrich them-one in which they will flourish while enrolled, be proud of on graduation day, and cherish for the rest of their lives

To this end, College Counseling starts early. Beginning in the ninth grade, students and their families are invited to a series of individual and group meetings that address college-related issues appropriate to each year of Upper School. These sessions surround such topics as:

  • the competitive landscape of college admissions
  • the process by which colleges and universities evaluate applicants for admission
  • the roles college board examinations and AP courses play
  • how to decide what type of institution is most fitting
  • how to best prepare for campus visits and interviews
  • the nuts and bolts of the application process, and
  • financial aid.

The program also provides electives for SAT preparation and application preparation. Finally, the College Counselor works closely with each Senior to oversee this process, help prepare college applications, and subsequently advocate, on each Senior's behalf, his/her candidacy with the institutions of choice. Upper School students receive monthly "College Matters" information, found in the monthly bulletin, Looking Ahead.
